Science Across Cultures - Welcome to Victoria & Nasser

The LBB is delighted to welcome Nassar Darwish (Spain) and Victoria de Lange (Canada), who have come to work with us for a few months. Victoria studies as an undergraduate at the University of Victoria. She arrived on September 4th and will work on an enzymatic biosensor project under Dorothee's supervision until December 20th. Nasser is a PhD candidate from Universitat de Barcelona. He arrived on August 15th, 2007 and will work on the development of a Waveguide Excited Fluorescence Microscope (WExFM) until November 15th, 2007.

It is wonderful to be able to encourage the international exchange of scientific ideas and knowledge with the world. We look forward to many great discussions, exciting results and fun activities together with Nasser and Victoria.

Expert Experience from China

We are honoured by the presence of Prof. Dr. Li-Min Zheng at the LBB for the next few months. She will help us to unravel some mysteries of chemistry related to our work with biosensors and bioelectronics. Her educational and work experience is as follows:

B.S. (1986), M.S. (1989) and Ph.D. (1992) in Chemistry at Nanjing University, China; Postdoctoral fellow (1994-96), University of Zurich; Postdoctoral fellow (1996), Academia Sinica of Taiwan; Visiting scholar (1999-2000), University of Houston; Lecturer (1992-97), Associate professor (1997-2002) and Professor (2002-), Nanjing University; Winner of Distinguished Young Scholar Award of Chinese Natural Science Foundation (2003); Vice-dean of School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (2005-).

Her current research interests include: Metal phosphonate materials; Low dimensional molecule-based magnetic materials; Surface coordination chemistry.

The Next PhD Addition to the LBB Team

Elsa Thomasson studied in the Engineering Physics Master Program at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. She came to the ETH in September 2006 to work on her Master Thesis Project "Wet Particle Lithography-Patterning Proteins Totally in Liquid" with the Laboratory for Surface Science and Technology (LSST). Upon the successful completion of her thesis, Ella decided to remain in Zürich and to begin her PhD in our group at the beginning of May, which pleases us greatly. She will be working in the area of mechanobiology and muscle tissue engineering under the supervision of Dr. Alfredo Franco-Obregón (Al).
